Becoming Leaders

It’s one thing to take charge and do the right thing yourself; it’s another to inspire others to do the same. Leadership is about taking charge, doing the right thing, and inspiring others to do the same. This week, we'll cover the qualities of a leader, the difference of good leaders vs bad leaders, and how leaders can shape the future of their communities.

While we can easily define leadership, it might be hard to understand the effect that a leader can have on a group or organization. One area where you will see the real impact of leadership is at work, usually in an office setting. Here, managers, owners, and supervisors can make the most of good leadership to achieve various goals for their employees. This article, on indeed.com, contains a short video explaining what makes someone a leader, as well as how good leaders can create good environments for those around them.

While anyone can assume the role of leader, it takes a certain skill to be a good or effective one. While this might come naturally for some, for others, they may need advice or some tips to become an effective leader themselves. On ottawa.edu, there's a list of 8 useful and important skills one must learn if they wish to develop into a good quality leader. Skills like tolerance, understanding, and even just basic listening will go a long way into becoming a better leader overall.

Our final resource this week comes to us from a familiar source:
postivepsychology.com. Here, we found a long list of activities, exercises, and games all relating to understanding and improving the meaning and quality of future leaders. While this list is quite extensive, there is a small worksheet (found here in a pdf format) containing multiple columns for listing the characteristics, beliefs, and abilities that a good leader should have, as well as some follow up questions below. Feel free to fill in the blanks yourself, as a few of our youth did on Wednesday. Here's some of their responses for the characteristics portion:  flexible, courageous. friendly, open-minded.

How would you define what makes a leader? Are there any leaders in your community? Let us know in the comments below!
