When groups of like-minded youth and young adults get together for the common good, great things can happen. The five stages of group development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and transforming, can help youth achieve their best within a team.

Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Transforming
In the
YouTube video, titled Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing: Bruce Tuckman's
Team Stages Model Explained, by the channel MindToolsVideos, the four core
phases for group development, first identified by psychologist Bruce Tuckman in
the 1960s, are explained. They are:
- Forming: The initial stage
where group members introduce and learn about themselves.
- Storming: The second stage
where different personalities may clash with each other, as
teammates question how effective they are as a team and if there should be
a group leader or not. Some groups may not progress past this second
stage.
- Norming: The third stage, where
group members resolve the issues. They now
learn to effectively cooperate.
- Performing: The fourth and
final main stage, where the team can finally come together to complete
their task successfully. The group leader can now assign tasks to teammates that best
suit them so that everyone can do their best work possible.
- Transforming: The team has fulfilled their purpose and now part ways or reflects on their group work.
The website
"Terrapin Adventures" has a blog post that further explains the stages
of group development, including the fifth stage, Transforming, where the group
dissolves once all tasks have been completed. While the post is tailored
towards a work/corporate setting, it's important to remember that group
development is possible with any team, even friends and family.
