The evolution
of social media is a concept that youth and young adults of different
identities will consider a hub of information. At the center of this hub are
the social media influencers. These are companies, organizations, but commonly
individuals who are selling an idea or product. Anybody can consider
themselves an influencer, but how and what for is the question. Using social
media as a tool that is a power for the common good is an
encouraging start.

Social Media 101
Social media and advocacy are not siblings, but they can be great partners. An influencer has a platform that they can share and promote resources. The ability to connect with local, state, national communities is effective for movements. The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) has an array of templates to use social media for advocacy. These templates focus on Facebook and Twitter as platforms to enact policy changes.
Advocacy Stories by Youth for Youth
Advocacy Stories by Youth for Youth is a YouTube video playlist containing several stories from young adults and teens sharing their experiences growing up with a disability. These stories are their experiences with social, work, and school settings. Anyone with a story to share can become an influencer, and no matter if the story is good or bad, they have the power to change opinions, laws, and lives with their message.
How can you use social media for the common good as an influencer? Let us know in the comment section below. For youth and young adults, ages 13-26, join us on the SPAN Youth Chat on Wednesdays from 3:30 - 4:00 PM.
