Accessible Cooking

Nothing beats an omelette with a side of crispy bacon in the morning, but before the dish comes the cooking. And, cooking can come easy to you and me but there are individuals with disabilities that need help to develop this important life skill. There is an excellent and user-friendly website that makes it their mission to bring the joys of cooking to everybody including those with intellectual disabilities. This is awesome because we can all agree, everybody needs to eat! So let's read on.

This week's youth chat featured a video on the website, AccessibleChef, which discusses the benefits of individuals with disabilities developing cooking skills. The benefits included were cooking and trying new foods, bonding with friends and family in the kitchen, and how measuring ingredients can lead to academic excellence in math or science. But, one of the useful tools of the website that was shared in the chat was the Recipe Creator.

A fantastic resource that young adult facilitators and youth used to create an eye-appealing recipe with a list of ingredients, cooking tools, steps, and a picture of the finished product. The tool helps to teach anyone how to cook simple yet delicious meals even with individuals who struggle with mobility. The link the Recipe Creator can be found at the end of this post, under "Resources, "here is a screenshot of the tool:

We encourage all of you to give the Recipe Creator a try and to look at some of the community-shared recipes on the website. You never know, you might just find a new idea for your next meal.

Any aspiring chefs out there? Does anyone have a recipe they would like to share on AccessibleChef or with us? If so, jump down to the comment section and share your culinary creations! And if you want to be a part of the conversation next week, join us on the weekly SPAN youth chats, Wed., 3:00-3:30PM. And don't forget to bring a friend and have them subscribe to the SPAN Youth Hub blog. We are always excited to welcome new faces on the youth chat and have them part of the youth-focused conversation. See you next week!
