Learning a second language can seem tough, especially to those who grew up only learning their native language. However, there are many apps, resources, and specialities that make it easier to get the hang of a second language. Apps like Busuu, Duolingo, and MemRise allow new users to generally pick up sentence structure, native writing, phrases, and more.
Honest Advice for Learning a Language
Learning another language gives you more than new words to use. It helps you see the world differently, understand new cultures, and connect with people you might not otherwise meet. For youth and young adults, it can also support confidence, independence, and personal growth.
In the video “Honest Advice To Someone Who Wants to Learn a Language” YouTuber Olly Richards, a founder of linguist website StoryLearning®, explains that learning a new language takes time, patience, and regular practice; and that there are no quick or easy ways to become fluent. Instead, learners should focus on useful words and phrases, practice speaking and writing often, and remember that staying consistent and patient is the real key to fluency.
Language learning becomes easier when it connects to your real interests and goals. Whether you want to travel, talk with family, improve job opportunities, or learn about different cultures, tying your practice to something meaningful keeps you motivated. When the learning has purpose, the experience becomes much more enjoyable.
The UNC (University of North Carolina)'s blog post, "Learning Languages", gives clear, research-based tips for learning a new language. It encourages regular practice with listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and highlights the value of steady, spaced study instead of cramming. Although made for college students, the advice is easy to adapt for many learners, including those who may need more accessible study methods.
